Ask the word why

There is a version of studying that looks exactly like reading and does almost nothing, and a version that looks almost identical and does a great deal. The difference is a single question, asked at the right moment, of the thing in front of you.

Picture two people studying the same page. The first reads it top to bottom, nodding along; every sentence makes sense, nothing snags, and at the end the page feels learned. The second reads more slowly, and after each fact stops to ask one small question — why would that be true? — and takes a moment to answer it. On the surface, the second person is just reading with more friction. Underneath, they are doing something the first person never does: reaching into what they already know and tying the new fact to it. A week later, only one of them still has the page.

That is not a parable. It is more or less the design of a real experiment, and the gap it opened between the two readers is one of the more reliable findings in the study of memory. The question at the centre of it is almost comically simple. It is just why.

The one-question experiment

In 1987, Michael Pressley and colleagues — Mark McDaniel, James Turnure, Eileen Wood and Maheen Ahmad — published a study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition that gave the technique its slightly severe name: elaborative interrogation. The setup was plain. Adults read a series of sentences, each stating some arbitrary fact about a particular kind of man — the hungry man got into his car, that sort of thing. Bland, forgettable, easily confused with one another.

One group simply read the sentences and tried to remember them. The other group was handed a single prompt after each one: why would that man do that? — and had to come up with an answer. The hungry man got into his car … to drive to a restaurant, perhaps, because he had no food at home. Nothing clever was required. The answers were often obvious. But the group that stopped to ask why remembered far more of the sentences afterwards — routinely getting the "which man did what" pairings right where the readers were left guessing.

What the question does is force a connection. A bare fact floats free; there is nothing to catch it. Asking why makes you rummage through everything you already know until you find a reason the fact could hang on, and that reason is a hook. You are not storing the sentence any more. You are storing the sentence attached to a web you already had, and a thing attached to a web is far harder to lose than a thing set down on the floor.

A fact you can explain is not one more fact. It is an old thing you already knew, wearing a new coat.

Why the question is doing the work

This isn't an isolated trick; it sits on top of one of the oldest results in memory research. In 1972, Fergus Craik and Robert Lockhart proposed what they called levels of processing: the deeper and more meaningfully you handle a piece of information, the better you remember it. Notice a word's shape and you keep little; notice what it means, and how it connects to everything else, and it stays. Asking "why?" is simply a way of forcing yourself down to the deep, meaning-based level, every time, on purpose.

It also overlaps with two ideas that have their own pages in this journal. Coming up with your own answer, rather than being handed one, is a small dose of the generation effect — we remember what we produce better than what we merely read. And tying a new fact to your own store of knowledge is a cousin of making a word about yourself: both work by connecting the unfamiliar to something already dense with meaning and easy to reach.

How good is the technique, honestly? In 2013, John Dunlosky and colleagues published a sweeping review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest, grading ten popular study strategies by how well their benefits held up across students, materials and tests. Elaborative interrogation earned a rating of moderate utility — real and worth using, but not in the top tier alongside spacing your practice and testing yourself, which were the two clear winners. Moderate is not faint praise for something that costs you one extra question and a few seconds.

The catch that makes it honest

Here is the part that keeps this from being magic — and it is the same shape of catch we keep running into. Asking "why?" only works if you have something to answer with.

In 1992, Vera Woloshyn, Pressley and Wolfgang Schneider ran a study that drew the boundary sharply. They compared readers who knew a lot about a topic with readers who knew little, and had some of each group use elaborative interrogation while others just read. The knowledgeable readers who only read still outperformed the low-knowledge readers who dutifully asked "why?" of everything. The strategy helped within each group — but it could not conjure understanding out of nothing. You can only tie a new fact to a web you already have. Ask "why?" about something utterly foreign, with no prior knowledge to reach for, and the question echoes in an empty room.

For a language learner this lands in a very particular way. A foreign word, once more, is two things bundled together: a meaning and a brand-new form — a sound and a spelling you have never held before. Elaborative interrogation is a meaning tool. Asking why saudade describes a particular ache, or why a French verb takes the preposition it does, deepens your grip on the concept and threads it into what you know. What it does not do is teach your mouth and eye the raw shape of the word. That still has to be earned the ordinary way — by meeting the word enough times, spaced out, until its spelling and sound are automatic. As with the keyword method and with emotion, "why?" gives the word a rich place to land; it doesn't spare you the reps.

There is a small mercy hidden in the research, though. When Woloshyn and colleagues looked at how good people's "why" answers were, the quality mattered surprisingly little — the readers who gave shaky or incomplete explanations still gained. It seems the memory benefit comes largely from the act of reaching for a reason, not from landing on the perfect one. You don't have to be right. You have to try.

Worth remembering: pausing to answer "why would that be true?" ties new information to what you already know and reliably improves memory — the effort of reaching for a reason matters more than getting it exactly right. But it needs an existing knowledge base to hook into, and for a foreign word it strengthens the meaning, not the raw sound and spelling. Ask why, then still do the repetition.

How to point it at a word

The classic studies used facts, not vocabulary — so applying "why?" to a foreign word takes a small translation. The move is to refuse the bare word-equals-translation pair and insist on a reason, a connection, a because. A few concrete ways:

  • Ask why the word means what it means. Many words have a logic hiding inside them — a root you know, a metaphor, a relative in another language. Why might the Spanish despertar ("to wake up") share a root with English "expert"? (It doesn't, but the false lead is itself a hook.) Cognates, prefixes, and word families give you real answers to chew on.
  • Ask why the sentence needs this word. When a word turns up in a real sentence, ask what would be lost without it — why this word and not a plainer neighbour. That forces you to process its precise shade of meaning rather than a rough gloss.
  • Answer out loud, even badly. The reaching is the point, not the polish. A half-right "why" said to yourself beats a perfect one you only intended to think.
  • Only ask when you have something to answer with. For a word in a language you've barely started, there may be no web to tie it to yet — that's fine. Give it a few plain exposures first, and save the "why?" for once you have a foothold.
  • Then still do the reps. "Why?" plants the meaning richly and fast. The foreign form arrives on its own schedule — through repeated, spaced encounters. Let the well-understood word keep coming back until you don't have to think.
