A word remembers the room it was learned in
You practise a word at the kitchen table and it comes easily. Then you meet it in the wild — a shop, a conversation — and it's gone. Your memory has been keeping notes you never asked for, and one of them is where you were.
Here is a small, deflating experience most learners have had without naming it. You sit at the same table, in the same chair, with the same cup of coffee, and you drill a batch of new words until they come back cleanly. You feel ready. Then, hours later, someone across a noisy café asks you a question, and one of those words — a word you knew, at the table, an hour ago — simply refuses to arrive. It's not that you didn't learn it. It's that you learned it somewhere else.
Your memory, it turns out, is a diligent and slightly overzealous note-taker. When you learn a word, it doesn't file away the word alone. It quietly bundles in the surroundings — the room, the light, the quiet, the coffee — as though the setting were part of the word's identity. Later, when you're back in that setting, the whole bundle comes loose more easily. Change the setting, and you've thrown away half the cues. This is context-dependent memory, and once you know it's there, you can stop letting your words get chained to a single chair.
The divers who proved it
The most famous demonstration is also the most theatrical. In 1975, Duncan Godden and Alan Baddeley published a study in the British Journal of Psychology with a wonderfully literal title: "Context-dependent memory in two natural environments: on land and underwater." Their volunteers were members of a diving club. Each learned lists of unrelated words in one of two places — on dry land, or roughly twenty feet down, breathing through a regulator on the seabed. Then each was asked to recall the words, either in the same environment or in the other one.
The pattern was clean and strange. Words learned on land came back best on land; words learned underwater came back best underwater. Swap the environment between learning and recall and performance dropped noticeably — on the order of a third of the words simply failed to surface. The divers hadn't forgotten the words in any deep sense. They'd learned them in a place, and asking for them in a different place cost them dearly. The sea had become part of the memory.
Why a word clings to its surroundings
The idea underneath the divers has a more sober name. In 1973, Endel Tulving and Donald Thomson set it out in Psychological Review as the encoding specificity principle: a cue helps you retrieve a memory only to the degree that the cue was part of the memory when it was first laid down. Whatever was present at the moment of learning — deliberately or not — becomes a potential handle for pulling the memory back later.
Most of those handles are things you never chose. The word on the page was the thing you were trying to learn, but your brain wasn't so selective. It also caught the hum of the fridge, the angle of the afternoon light, the faint background of your own mood. None of that is relevant to what the word means. All of it gets stitched loosely to the memory anyway, and each thread becomes one more way back in — but only if it's still there when you go looking.
A word studied in one fixed place isn't just learned. It's learned there — and part of what you'll need to recall it is the room.
That's the trap in a comfortable study routine. The same desk, the same time, the same silence feels like discipline, and in one sense it is. But it also quietly writes your entire vocabulary into a single set of surroundings you will almost never be standing in when you actually need the words — mid-conversation, at a ticket counter, reading a sign in the rain.
The useful half of the finding
If the lesson stopped at "context matters," it would be interesting and useless: you can't drag the café into your bedroom, and you certainly can't do your revision underwater. The genuinely practical discovery is the flip side, and it came a few years later.
In 1978, Steven Smith, Arthur Glenberg and Robert Bjork ran a series of experiments published in Memory & Cognition under the title "Environmental context and human memory." One condition is the one worth memorising. People studied a list of words twice. Some studied both times in the same room. Others studied once in one room and once in a plainly different one — different décor, different feel. Everyone was then tested in a third, new room they hadn't studied in at all.
The group that had split its studying across two rooms remembered more than the group that had studied twice in one. Deliberately varying the setting didn't scatter their memory; it strengthened it. The explanation follows straight from encoding specificity: a word tied to two different backdrops has two independent sets of cues to ride back on, so it's no longer hostage to any single one of them. Study a word in one place and you've built it one road home. Study it in two, and you've built it a network — far more robust when the test arrives somewhere neither road was expecting.
This is the same logic that powers habits you may already trust from other angles. It's a cousin of why mixing up your practice beats studying in tidy blocks, and of why spreading study across days outperforms one long session — spacing works partly because the days it spans are never quite the same, so every review quietly adds a fresh context. Variety, which feels like a lack of discipline, keeps turning out to be the discipline that matters.
A couple of honest limits
Two cautions, so the divers aren't asked to carry more than they can. First, the dramatic underwater effect is more fragile than its fame suggests. A 2021 replication by Jaap Murre, published in Royal Society Open Science, ran the diving experiment again and failed to reproduce the clean land-versus-water result. Godden and Baddeley themselves had already found, in a 1980 follow-up, that the context effect showed up when people had to recall words from scratch but vanished when they only had to recognise them — a printed word is such a strong cue that it swamps whatever the room was contributing. Context is real, but it's a gentle force, easily drowned out by a stronger one.
Second, "context" is much broader than a physical room, and that's where the practical power actually lives. The setting that clings to a word includes the sentence it sat in, the time of day, your mood, even the other words around it. You don't need to relocate to a different building to vary it. Meet a word inside a new sentence, at a different hour, after a different word, and you've changed its context in exactly the way that counts — without moving an inch. The room was only ever the most visible example.
Where vocabla fits
A fair amount of this is built into how vocabla already works, less by design of the divers than by good instincts about memory. You don't meet a word once, in one frozen frame; you meet it across different sentences, so it never gets welded to a single phrasing or a single backdrop. Reviews are spaced to return over days rather than crammed into one sitting, which means each word is quietly re-learned in a slightly different context every time it comes around — a new mood, a new moment, a new set of neighbours. And because practice arrives in short bouts you can do anywhere — a queue, a train, a spare few minutes — the words themselves get learned in more than one place, which is the whole point.
So take the divers' lesson, but not their trench coat of certainty. Don't guard a single sacred study spot in the hope the test will kindly happen there. Learn your words in the café and on the train and half-asleep on the sofa; meet them in one sentence today and another next week. Give each word more than one way home, and it will stop being the word you knew at the table and start being the word you simply know.
