Four score and ten
Learn to count in French and everything is fine until you reach seventy — at which point the language stops giving you new words and starts doing arithmetic. Ninety, it turns out, is "four-twenties-ten." Danish is stranger still, and English hides the same trick inside a word you already know. The reason so many languages count in twenties is older than any of them, and it is standing at the end of your own feet.
Somewhere around your second week of French, the numbers ambush you. Everything up to sixty behaves: dix, vingt, trente, quarante, cinquante, soixante — a tidy new word every ten steps, exactly as English trained you to expect. Then you ask how to say seventy, and the floor gives way. Seventy is soixante-dix: "sixty-ten." Eighty is quatre-vingts: "four-twenties." And ninety-nine, the number that breaks every beginner, is quatre-vingt-dix-neuf — literally four-twenties-ten-nine, a small sum you are expected to add up in your head before the waiter loses patience.
Learners tend to take this personally, as though France were being difficult on purpose. It isn't. You've simply walked into the visible edge of one of the oldest habits in human counting — the base of twenty — and French happens to wear it on the outside. Once you know what you're looking at, it stops being a cruelty to memorise and becomes a fossil to read.
It isn't just France
The first clue that this is bigger than one stubborn country is that not all French speakers do it. Cross into Belgium or much of French-speaking Switzerland and seventy becomes a clean, sensible septante; ninety becomes nonante. In the Swiss cantons of Vaud, Valais and Fribourg, eighty is huitante. These aren't slang or corruptions — if anything they are the tidier forms, descended straight from the Latin septuaginta and nonaginta, the plain base-ten words. It is standard French, the prestige version taught worldwide, that kept the odd twenties-based count for its higher numbers while its neighbours quietly smoothed theirs out.
So the question flips. The mystery isn't why Belgium says nonante. It's why Paris says quatre-vingt-dix — why the biggest, most influential French of all held on to a system built on twenties.
The base hiding inside "score"
Before we blame the French, it's worth noticing that English does exactly the same thing — we've just buried the evidence in a word most people no longer use for counting. That word is score, and it means twenty.
You still meet it in its most famous outing. When Abraham Lincoln opened the Gettysburg Address with "Four score and seven years ago," he was not being poetic for its own sake; he was counting the way English once did. Four score and seven is four twenties plus seven — eighty-seven years back from 1863, which lands precisely on 1776 and the founding of the nation he'd come to talk about. The arithmetic is the rhetoric.
The King James Bible keeps the same unit alive. "The days of our years are threescore years and ten," says Psalm 90 — three twenties and ten, seventy, the old proverbial span of a human life. English never lacked a twenty-based count. It simply demoted score from arithmetic to poetry, the way it retired the intimate "thou", and let the neat decimal seventy, eighty, ninety take over the everyday work.
Every language on this page can count in twenties. The only thing that varies is how much of the machinery it leaves showing.
Denmark, where ninety is four-and-a-half twenties
If French feels like arithmetic, Danish feels like a riddle with a step missing. Danish, too, counts in twenties — but it folds the sums up so tightly that native speakers use the words fluently without ever unpacking what's inside.
Sixty is tres, worn down from an older tresindstyve — "three times twenty." Eighty is firs, from "four times twenty." So far, so French. The trouble starts on the odd tens, because Danish reaches them by counting half a twenty short of the next one. Fifty is halvtreds, a crushed form of halvtredsindstyve, meaning "half-third times twenty" — that is, two-and-a-half twenties, 2½ × 20 = 50. By the same logic seventy (halvfjerds) is three-and-a-half twenties, and ninety (halvfems) is four-and-a-half twenties: 4½ × 20 = 90.
Read that slowly, because it is genuinely one of the more baroque things a living language asks of its speakers, and Danes do it every time they read a price or a bus number. The Danish "half," here, is the old Germanic sense of half short of the next whole — "half-third" meaning halfway between two and three. It is, as one history of the system cheerfully admits, the kind of thing that makes even neighbouring Swedes and Norwegians — whose numbers went fully decimal — quietly grateful they don't have to.
Fingers, then toes
Pull back far enough and the same base keeps surfacing in languages that never met. Basque counts in twenties: hogei is twenty, and forty is berrogei, "two twenties." Georgian does it too. So did the Maya, whose calendar-keeping arithmetic ran on twenties. Traditional Welsh built forty as deugain ("two twenties") and fifty as hanner cant ("half a hundred") — though modern Welsh schools now teach a cleaner decimal count alongside it, the same tidying-up impulse that gave Belgium its nonante.
When a pattern turns up this widely among unrelated peoples, the cause is usually not culture but the body. We count in tens for an obvious reason — we have ten fingers — and the whole world's love of ten is really a love of two hands. Base twenty is what you get when you don't stop at the hands. A barefoot person counting the most natural counters available to them reaches ten on the fingers and then, still needing more, looks down: ten more, on the toes. Twenty is one whole person's worth of digits. The linguists' word for a base-twenty system, vigesimal, and the poets' score are just two names for the moment our ancestors ran out of fingers and kept going.
Why standard French, almost alone in Western Europe, kept so much of the count visible is still argued over. A popular idea points to the Celts — Gaulish, like its Breton and Welsh cousins, leaned on twenties, and some suspect that older substrate left its fingerprints on French. It's a plausible story rather than a settled fact, and worth holding loosely. What's certain is that the twenty was there long before France was.
The hospital that is still called Three Hundred
The best proof that this was once ordinary, workaday counting is that people named things with it — and some of those names are still standing. In the Paris of the 1260s, King Louis IX founded a refuge for the blind poor of the city, built to house three hundred residents. Three hundred, in the French of the day, was fifteen twenties. So the place was called, simply, the Quinze-Vingts — "the Fifteen-Twenties."
Nearly eight centuries later the name has never been changed. The Hôpital des Quinze-Vingts still stands in the 12th arrondissement, now one of France's leading eye hospitals — a modern institution walking around under a medieval number, its very name a little sum in base twenty that Parisians say without blinking. Old French did this all the time: it had six-vingts for a hundred and twenty and could have gone further. Most of those forms fell away. This one survived because it had become a name, and names are where dead arithmetic goes to live forever.
What this means for a learner
All of this has a very practical edge, because numbers are the part of a language you can least afford to fake. You can survive a fuzzy adjective; you cannot half-understand a price, a platform, a phone number, or a time. And numbers are precisely where the "just memorise a word" model of vocabulary falls apart, because in half the languages you might pick, the higher numbers aren't single words. They're small, rule-bound sentences of arithmetic.
Which means the way in is not to grind ninety-nine separate flashcards, but to learn the handful of building blocks and the grammar that snaps them together:
- Learn the joints, not every number. In French, once you truly own vingt, soixante, and the trick of "sixty-ten" and "four-twenties," the entire range from 70 to 99 falls out of a rule instead of a list.
- Hear the sum, not the syllables. Train yourself to parse quatre-vingt-dix-neuf as 4 × 20 + 10 + 9 in real time. Slow and deliberate at first; automatic sooner than you'd think.
- Know which dialect you're standing in. If you're learning for Geneva or Brussels, septante and nonante will serve you better than the Parisian forms — and are far kinder to a beginner's arithmetic.
- Practise them in the wild. Numbers only stick when they're prices and dates and door codes, not abstractions. Meet them inside real sentences, where they actually turn up.
None of this is really harder than the counting you already do; it's just more of it left visible. The French child and the Danish child learn their strange sums the same way you will — not by being told the history, but by hearing the numbers enough times that the arithmetic sinks below the surface and quatre-vingt-dix becomes as instant as "ninety." That, in the end, is the whole job: enough good encounters that the sum stops being a calculation and becomes a word.
