A picture is worth a thousand flashcards: why drawing a word beats writing it

Sketch a new word for forty seconds and it lodges nearly twice as deep as the same word copied out neatly. The odd part is that it barely matters whether you can draw — and the honest part is what a drawing quietly leaves out.

Picture the two most ordinary ways to try to keep a word: you write it out, a few times, hoping the repetition wears a groove; or you draw it — a small, quick, probably terrible sketch of what it means. One of those feels like real study. The other feels like doodling in the margin while you avoid real study. As it turns out, the doodle wins, and it isn't close.

This is one of the tidiest findings in the memory literature, and it comes with an unusually plain name: the drawing effect. In 2016, Jeffrey Wammes, Melissa Meade and Myra Fernandes, then at the University of Waterloo, published a paper in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology with a title that gives away the ending — "The drawing effect: Evidence for reliable and robust memory benefits in free recall." Across seven experiments, drawing a word beat writing it out, over and over, by a margin most study tricks can only dream of.

The experiment

The core version is almost absurdly simple. Participants saw a list of ordinary, easily pictured words — apple, balloon, that kind of thing. For each one, they had forty seconds to do one of two things: draw a little picture of it, or write the word out repeatedly. Then, after a short filler task, they were given sixty seconds to recall as many of the words as they could, in any order.

The people who had drawn recalled more than twice as many words as the people who had written. Same words, same time, same test — the only difference was whether the forty seconds went into a sketch or into handwriting, and that single choice roughly doubled what stuck.

A doubling is the sort of number that makes a careful researcher suspicious, so the bulk of the paper is Wammes and colleagues trying to make the effect go away. Maybe drawing just made people think harder about each word's meaning? They controlled for that, and the drawing advantage remained. Maybe it was simply the mental imagery — picturing the thing in your head? They had people do that instead, and drawing still won. Maybe it was the plain fact that a drawing is a picture, and pictures are famously memorable? They compared drawing against being handed a ready-made picture, and the act of making the drawing still came out ahead. One by one, the obvious explanations were ruled out, and the effect kept standing.

The detail that seals it: in a later experiment they cut the drawing time to just four seconds — barely enough for a frantic scribble — and lengthened the list. Drawing still helped. Whatever it is doing, it does not need a finished picture to do it.

Forty seconds of drawing beat forty seconds of writing by more than double. Four seconds of drawing still won. The pen was the same; only the task changed.

Why a scribble outperforms a sentence

The researchers' explanation is that drawing is not one act but three braided together, and memory loves a braid. To draw a word you must first elaborate on its meaning — decide what a "balloon" actually looks like, which is a small act of understanding. Then you perform a motor action, the hand tracing a shape. And finally you see the picture you've made, a visual trace to look back on. Semantic, motor, visual: three separate handholds on the same word, laid down in the same moment and knotted together into what the authors call a "context-rich representation."

Writing a word out gives you almost none of that. The motor action is rote and identical for every word, the visual result is just more text, and copying "balloon" five times demands no thought about what a balloon is. This is the same theme that runs through much of what we've written here — that a word survives in proportion to how many different threads you tie it to. It's why saying a word aloud beats reading it silently, why a gesture outlasts a definition, and why a vivid mental image holds a word in place. Drawing simply happens to bundle several of those threads into one cheap, ten-second act.

You cannot draw. It does not matter.

Here is the part that tends to relieve people. The drawing effect does not reward talent. In these studies the sketches were, by and large, dreadful — hurried stick-figure approximations, unrecognisable to anyone but their maker — and they worked anyway. The benefit comes from the process of translating a meaning into marks on a page, not from the artistic quality of the result. A drawing only you could interpret is doing its whole job the instant you finish it.

That's what makes this one of the rare study tricks with no barrier to entry. There's nothing to buy, nothing to get good at, no self-consciousness required, because no one else ever has to see it. If you can hold a pen and you know, roughly, what a word means, you already have everything the method asks for.

And its reach turns out to be wide. In a 2018 review in Current Directions in Psychological Science, Fernandes, Wammes and Meade gathered the growing pile of follow-up work and reported that the effect shows up not just in undergraduates but in healthy older adults — for whom drawing outperformed several other well-known study techniques — and even in people with dementia, a population for whom very little reliably helps memory at all. Later work from the same lab, in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, found that drawing also narrows the usual gap between concrete and abstract words, and other studies extended it from single words to whole term-and-definition pairs — closer, at last, to the shape of real vocabulary.

The honest small print

Now the catch, because there always is one, and it matters more for foreign vocabulary than for any of the lists these experiments used.

A drawing encodes a word's meaning. That is exactly what you want when the word is in a language you already speak — "balloon" is a picture, and the picture is the point. But a foreign word is a pairing: a new, arbitrary sound-and-spelling bolted onto a meaning you may already own. When you draw a balloon to learn the Spanish globo, your sketch captures the balloon beautifully and says nothing whatsoever about the letters g-l-o-b-o or how they sound. The drawing can make the concept unforgettable while leaving the actual foreign word — the part you're there to learn — barely touched.

So drawing, on its own, is only half a vocabulary tool. It builds a strong hook for the meaning, then needs a second step to tie the foreign form to that hook. This is the seam where the keyword method fits neatly: use the sound of the foreign word to decide what to draw, so the sketch smuggles the pronunciation in with it. Globo sounds like "globe"; draw a globe-shaped balloon, and now the picture carries both the meaning and a thread back to the word's sound. The drawing supplies the vividness; the keyword supplies the bridge.

The other limit is the plain one: it's slow. Forty seconds, or even ten, is a lovely investment in a word that keeps escaping you and an absurd one to repeat across the few thousand words that make up a working vocabulary. Drawing is a scalpel, not a shovel. It earns its time on the stubborn handful, not the long tail.

Worth remembering: drawing a word roughly doubles how well you recall it, and your bad drawings work exactly as well as good ones — the benefit is in the making, not the art. But a sketch captures a word's meaning, not its foreign sound or spelling, so for vocabulary it works best paired with a keyword that lets the picture carry the pronunciation too. Save it for the words that refuse to stick.

How to actually use it

If you want to try it on a few words that keep slipping, the whole method fits in four lines:

  • Let the sound choose the picture. Find something the foreign word sounds like, and draw that, bent toward the meaning. This is the step that ties the sketch to the actual word rather than just to the idea.
  • Draw it fast and badly. Ten seconds, a scribble, no erasing. Speed is fine and ugliness is free — the research is emphatic that quality doesn't matter.
  • Make it a little strange. An odd, exaggerated, slightly wrong picture snags memory better than a tidy accurate one, for the same reason a vivid keyword image does.
  • Then look away and try to redraw it from memory. The recall attempt is where the learning compounds — you're combining the drawing effect with plain retrieval practice, which is the most reliable thing we know.

Where vocabla fits

Drawing is a wonderful thing to keep in your pocket for the dozen words that laugh at every other method — and it costs you nothing but a pen and a moment's dignity. But it is, by design, a hands-on ritual for a small number of words, and most of a vocabulary is not built one lovingly-sketched word at a time. It's built by the quiet, repeated business of meeting a word again inside a real sentence, just before you'd have forgotten it, until it stops needing any trick at all.
