The hardest job in the courtroom

In 1945 the world put the Nazi leadership on trial — and ran into a wall no court had ever properly solved. The proceedings had to happen in four languages at the same time. The people who made that possible invented something we now take for granted.

When the International Military Tribunal opened in Courtroom 600 of the Palace of Justice in Nuremberg on 20 November 1945, it faced a problem that sounds almost mundane next to the crimes it was there to judge, and was very nearly as hard to solve. The judges were American, British, French and Soviet. The defendants and their lawyers were German. Four nations had agreed to try the leaders of the Reich together, in one room — which meant every word spoken had to exist, at once, in English, French, Russian and German.

The old way of doing this was consecutive interpretation: the speaker says a sentence, then waits while an interpreter repeats it in another language, then continues. Do that for one language pair and a meeting runs at half speed. Do it for four, one after another, and a trial expected to take months would have stretched into years. The tribunal needed the impossible thing: interpretation that happened while the speaker was still speaking.

The man who said it could be done

The person who insisted it was possible was Léon Dostert, a French-born American who had immigrated as a young man and gone on to become General Eisenhower's personal interpreter during the war. Dostert had a linguist's ear and an organiser's nerve, and he was convinced that a human being could listen and speak at the same time — hearing one language pour into the ears while another flowed out of the mouth, a few seconds behind, without either stream drowning the other.

Almost everyone thought this was absurd. Surely the mind can only do one of those things at a time. Dostert's answer was to stage demonstrations and simply show sceptical officials that trained people could do it — that the trick was learnable. He got his chance, and the equipment to match, from an unlikely partner.

Wired for four languages

The hardware came from IBM, which offered the tribunal a system it called the "Hushaphone Filene-Finlay" — a descendant of an idea patented back in the 1920s by a Boston businessman, Edward Filene, and an engineer, A. Gordon Finlay, and tried out in a crude early form at an International Labour conference in Geneva in 1927. IBM lent the courtroom its modernised version essentially for free; the United States only paid to ship and install it. Hundreds of sets of headphones were run through the room — everyone present could turn a dial and choose which of the languages they wanted poured into their ears.

The interpreters sat in booths at the side of the court, glassed in at the front and sides and open at the top, close enough to watch the faces of the people whose words they were carrying. There were, in all, some thirty-six interpreters, working in three teams of twelve. A team held the microphones for about eighty-five minutes and was then relieved by a fresh one, because the concentration the work demanded could not be sustained much longer than that. And when a speaker got carried away, a monitor at a control desk had two lights: a yellow one that flashed you are going too fast, and a red one that meant stop — you have lost us, go back and say it again.

They were doing it live, with no delete key, in front of the world's press — and the words they were carrying were among the darkest ever spoken aloud in a court. A slip was not embarrassing. It could matter to a verdict.

It worked. The trial that many had feared would collapse under its own languages ran, and ran at something close to the speed of ordinary speech. Historians of the profession — above all Francesca Gaiba, whose 1998 book The Origins of Simultaneous Interpretation reconstructed the whole operation from the records — mark that November morning as the true birth of simultaneous interpretation as we know it. Within a year the young United Nations had adopted the same method, and today it is simply how the UN, the Council of Europe and the European Parliament talk to themselves. The booths got smaller and the electronics better; the human feat inside them has not changed at all.

The secret hidden inside the job

Here is the part that matters for anyone learning a language. A good simultaneous interpreter is not swapping word for word. They cannot be. German famously parks its verb at the end of the sentence — you can be halfway through a long German clause with no idea yet what the subject is actually doing — so an interpreter who tried to translate word by word would either freeze or produce nonsense. What they do instead is listen past the words to the meaning, hold that idea in mind for a beat, and rebuild it from scratch in the other language, in that language's own natural order.

In other words, the hardest language job ever invented works only because a word is not a label glued to a thing. It is a small piece of meaning — portable, re-buildable, able to be lifted out of one language and set down, differently dressed, in another. The interpreter in the glass booth is living proof of it, sentence after sentence, at eighty-five-minute stretches.

Worth remembering: Simultaneous interpreters don't translate word-for-word — they can't, because grammar arrives in a different order in every language. They catch the meaning, hold it, and rebuild it. Which quietly settles an old question for language learners: a word isn't a label, it's a piece of portable meaning. Learn it that way and it travels; learn it as a bare label and it snaps the moment the sentence changes shape.

Where vocabla fits

You will probably never interpret a war-crimes trial. But the interpreters of Nuremberg handed every learner a clue about what "knowing a word" really means — and it is the opposite of what a flashcard usually trains. A flashcard teaches you gato = cat: a label, a matching pair, the most brittle kind of knowledge, because the instant a real sentence bends the word into a new shape or a new sense, the bare pairing lets go. The interpreter's kind of knowing is different: not the label, but the meaning underneath it, the thing you can carry across and rebuild.

That is the kind of knowing vocabla is built to grow. It teaches the words you actually need — in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian — a handful at a time and inside real sentences rather than as a naked list, so every word arrives already wearing its meaning and its habits, not just its translation. Then it brings each one back on a spaced schedule, in fresh contexts and voices, until you stop decoding it and simply understand it — the way the person in the booth understands, fast enough to speak on the far side of the same breath. You are not aiming to become an interpreter. You are aiming for the thing that makes one possible: words you hold as meaning, not as labels.
