Give a word a place to live: the 2,500-year-old memory palace, and what it can and can't do for vocabulary

The oldest memory trick we have is also one of the best-evidenced — six weeks of it can turn an ordinary person into something close to a champion of recall. It is worth understanding exactly what it does, and being honest about the one place it fits a little awkwardly: the very thing you might reach for it to do.

The technique is older than paper. Around 500 BCE, according to a story Cicero tells in De Oratore, the Greek poet Simonides of Ceos slipped out of a banquet hall moments before its roof caved in. The bodies inside were crushed beyond recognition, but Simonides found he could name every victim — because he could picture, seat by seat, exactly where each guest had been sitting. He had, without meaning to, discovered that memory has a floor plan. Give a thing a place, and you can walk back to it later and find it waiting.

That discovery became the method of loci — Latin for "places" — and it ran, more or less unbroken, through the memory training of Roman orators, medieval scholars, and Renaissance philosophers. (The anonymous Roman handbook Rhetorica ad Herennium, from around 90 BCE, already describes it as a settled craft.) Today its practitioners are more likely to be found at the World Memory Championships, where people memorise the order of a shuffled deck of cards in under thirty seconds. But the machinery is identical to Simonides'. You take a route you know cold — your walk to the shop, the rooms of your childhood home — and you leave what you want to remember along it, one vivid image per stopping point. To recall the list, you take the walk.

The experiment that surprised the neuroscientists

What lifts this out of the realm of party trick is a study published in the journal Neuron in 2017 by Martin Dresler and a team spanning Radboud and Stanford. They began with the obvious question: are the world's top memory athletes simply built differently? They scanned twenty-three of the best in the world and found the answer was, essentially, no. Structurally, the athletes' brains looked ordinary. Almost all of them had merely trained the method of loci.

So the researchers ran the more interesting version of the study. They took fifty-one people with no memory training at all, and had one group practise the method of loci for six weeks — daily sessions of about half an hour. Before training, these ordinary participants could recall, on average, 26 words from a list of 72. After six weeks, the same people recalled 62. For comparison, the memory champions in the same test recalled 71 of the 72. Six weeks of an ancient trick had carried complete novices most of the way to the summit.

Two details make the finding sturdier than a headline number. First, it held: when the participants were brought back four months later, without any further practice in between, the advantage was still there. Second, the researchers could see the change in the brain. The trained participants' functional connectivity — the pattern of which regions fire together — had shifted measurably toward the pattern seen in the memory athletes. And the closer a given person's brain moved to the athletes' pattern, the more their memory had improved. The technique had not just taught a habit; it had reorganised the network the habit runs on.

Six weeks took ordinary people from 26 words to 62, out of 72. The champions managed 71. The gap between "gifted" and "trained" turned out to be mostly training.

Why places, of all things

The reason a memory palace works is that it borrows a system your brain already runs superbly well, and uses it to carry things it handles badly. You are, by evolutionary trade, a magnificent rememberer of space. You can picture the layout of a house you last stood in twenty years ago; you know without thinking which way the bathroom is from your bed. That spatial memory is ancient, deep, and almost effortless. Abstract lists — a run of unrelated words, a sequence of cards — are exactly what that system is not built for, so they wash out in minutes.

The method of loci smuggles the second kind of information into the first. By turning "the ninth item on the list" into "the strange thing sitting on my kitchen table," it converts a fragile, order-dependent memory into a durable spatial one, complete with a built-in retrieval path. It also quietly does two other things this journal keeps coming back to. It forces you to build a vivid mental image of each item, which is the same deep, elaborative processing that powers the keyword method. And walking the route to recall each item is an act of retrieval — reaching for the memory rather than re-reading it — which is the single most reliable way we know to make something stick.

The small print, honestly

Here the story needs slowing down, because the method of loci is powerful in a specific shape, and foreign vocabulary is not quite that shape. It is worth being clear about the seams.

The technique's home turf is the ordered list of concrete, picturable things. That is what nearly all the striking evidence tests. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in the British Journal of Psychology, by Jan Ondřej, pooled the research and found a genuinely large effect for the method of loci over ordinary rehearsal on immediate serial recall (a standardised effect size around d = 0.9 — large, by the conventions of the field). But "serial recall of a word list" is not the same task as "having a Spanish word arrive in your mouth at the right moment in a conversation." The palace is superb at storing a sequence you can walk through on demand. Living vocabulary has to fire out of order, instantly, cued by meaning — and that is a different demand than the one the palace is built to serve.

There is also the matter of what a foreign word actually is. It is not one thing to picture; it is a pairing — a strange new sound bolted to a meaning you already own. Concrete words cooperate: it is easy to set a vivid gato (a cat, yowling) on your doorstep. Abstract ones fight back — try placing "nevertheless" or "to allocate" along a hallway and you feel the friction immediately. This is precisely where the keyword method earns its keep, because it specialises in the sound-to-meaning bridge that loci alone doesn't build. In practice the two are best used together: keyword to forge each word's image, loci to file a set of them in order.

And none of it is free. The 26-to-62 result came from six weeks of daily, deliberate practice. Building and populating a palace is real cognitive work — which is a feature when the material genuinely matters and a poor trade when you are trying to learn several thousand words at a comfortable pace. The method of loci is a precision instrument, not a daily driver.

Worth remembering: the method of loci is astonishingly effective at fixing an ordered set of vivid images in durable memory — but foreign vocabulary is abstract and needs to be recalled out of order, by meaning. Reach for a palace when you have a specific, stubborn batch of words to lock down; pair it with the keyword method to picture each one; and let ordinary spaced practice carry the long tail.

How to actually build one

If you want to try it on, say, a dozen words you keep losing, the recipe is short:

  • Pick a route you know without thinking. Your home is the classic choice — front door, hallway, kitchen, sofa, and so on. The stops need to be in a fixed, natural order, so you can walk them the same way every time.
  • Turn each word into a picture first. Use the sound of the foreign word to conjure an image — French pain (bread) becomes a loaf in obvious pain, wincing. This is the keyword step, and it is what makes an abstract word placeable at all.
  • Put one image at each stop, and make it strange. The odder, more exaggerated, more physically interactive the scene, the better it sticks. A quiet loaf on the counter fades; a loaf screaming on your doorstep does not.
  • Walk the route to recall. Don't re-read your list. Take the mental walk, let each place hand you back its image, and read the word off the image. The walking is the retrieval, and the retrieval is the learning.
  • Reuse the palace. Once a set has moved into long-term memory, you can clear the route and refill it. Frequent travellers keep several.

Where vocabla fits

The honest place to land is this: the memory palace is a brilliant, specialised tool, and most of vocabulary learning is not a job for a specialised tool. It is a job for the quiet mechanics that work while you're not thinking about them — meeting a word inside a real sentence, saying it aloud, and seeing it again just before you'd forget it. That last one is the engine. Simonides could name the dead because he'd seen them seated once, in a place; you'll learn a few thousand words because you keep meeting them, spaced out, in changing forms, until they stop needing a trick at all.

That's the part vocabla is built to carry: the un-glamorous, day-after-day return of a word at the moment it's about to slip, inside a sentence rather than alone on a card. Keep a palace in your back pocket for the dozen words that refuse to stay — it's a genuinely powerful thing to have. But for the long, patient work of building a vocabulary, you don't need to construct a cathedral in your mind. You just need to be reminded, gently and at the right time, of the words you've already met.
