Should you study with music on? What lyrics do to a word you're learning
The idea that music makes you sharper is one of the most cherished study myths we have, and one of the most thoroughly dismantled. The truth underneath it is more useful — and, for anyone learning a foreign word, a little inconvenient.
Somewhere on your phone there is probably a playlist with a name like focus or deep work, and a quiet faith attached to it: that the right music doesn't just make studying more bearable but makes it better. It's a lovely belief, and it has a famous piece of science behind it. The trouble is that the science fell over years ago, and what got up in its place has a rather different thing to say — especially to anyone trying to lodge a new word in their head.
The myth that will not die
The faith has a name: the Mozart effect. It traces to a short 1993 paper in Nature by Frances Rauscher, Gordon Shaw and Catherine Ky, who had thirty-six students listen to ten minutes of Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D major before a spatial-reasoning task. The Mozart group scored higher — the equivalent, the authors reckoned, of eight or nine IQ points. It was a small, cautious study about one narrow skill, and its own authors noted the lift faded within about fifteen minutes. The public heard something grander: Mozart makes you smart. Governments posted classical CDs to new parents. A cottage industry was born.
Then people tried to reproduce it, and the effect thinned with every attempt. In 2010, Jakob Pietschnig, Martin Voracek and Anton Formann published a meta-analysis in Intelligence with a title that barely conceals a sigh — "Mozart effect–Shmozart effect." They pooled about forty studies and more than three thousand people, and found the boost was small at best and shrank close to nothing once you looked beyond the labs of the original researchers. Tellingly, an earlier study by Kristin Nantais and Glenn Schellenberg had already found the game: when people listened to a story they enjoyed instead of Mozart, they got the same bump. The "Mozart" in the Mozart effect was never Mozart. It was a few minutes of mild enjoyment and arousal nudging performance upward — something a good coffee or a favourite song does just as well, and just as briefly.
The Mozart effect turned out not to be about Mozart, or about getting smarter. It was about being briefly, pleasantly awake — which is real, but is not the same thing as learning.
That distinction — feeling switched on versus actually encoding something — is the hinge this whole piece turns on. Because when researchers stopped measuring a fuzzy glow after the music and started measuring what music does while you work, the picture got sharper, and less flattering.
The experiment that matters for words
The most useful work here comes from Nick Perham, a psychologist at Cardiff Metropolitan University who spent years asking a plainer question: not whether music makes you clever, but whether it wrecks the ordinary verbal tasks studying is made of — reading, and holding words in mind.
In a 2011 study in Applied Cognitive Psychology, Perham and Joanne Vizard had people do serial recall — see a short list and reproduce it in order, the mental move behind memorising almost anything — while different sounds played. Silence. Music they'd said they liked. Music they'd said they disliked. A voice droning a single repeated syllable. And a voice reading out random, changing digits. Two conditions clearly damaged recall: the changing speech, and the music — both kinds of music. Liking the song bought no protection at all. The people listening to their favourite track remembered no better than the people enduring music they hated; both did worse than silence.
Three years later, in the same journal, Perham and Harriet Currie ran the test that lands closest to real studying. Thirty people read passages and were quizzed on what they'd understood, under four conditions: quiet, lyrical music they liked, lyrical music they disliked, and instrumental music with no words. Comprehension fell under both kinds of lyrical music, liked and loathed alike — and held up under the instrumental track, roughly level with silence. The villain, it turned out, wasn't music as such. It was the words in the music.
Why lyrics, specifically, fight you
To see why, you have to know a little about the machinery you rehearse a word with. Working memory keeps verbal material alive in what Alan Baddeley called the phonological loop — a small inner voice that stores speech-like sound and refreshes it by silently repeating it. It's the thing running when you hold a phone number for the walk across the room, and it's exactly what you lean on when you meet Fernweh or saudade and try to make the shape of it stay.
That inner ear does not have a mute button for the outside world. As far back as 1982, Pierre Salamé and Baddeley showed that irrelevant speech barges into the loop and scrambles what you're trying to hold there — the irrelevant sound effect. The crucial detail, teased out by later work, is that the disruption comes from change: a steady, unvarying sound (that droning single syllable) does almost nothing, while sound that keeps shifting — speech, and melody, and above all lyrics, which are both at once — forces its way in and jostles your words out of order. You cannot choose not to process it. The system was built to keep listening.
So a lyric is close to the worst possible companion for verbal study: it is changing sound and language, pouring into the precise channel you're using to rehearse. This is the same reason saying a word aloud helps — it feeds the loop the right signal — and the reason a background vocal hurts: it feeds the loop the wrong one. And notice the trap in "but it's my favourite song." Perham's people proved that preference is beside the point. Worse, a song you love is a song you know the words to, which means your loop is quietly singing along whether you asked it to or not.
The honest exception
Now the part that keeps this from being a killjoy's memo, because music is not the enemy of your brain. In 2011, Juliane Kämpfe, Peter Sedlmeier and Frank Renkewitz gathered nearly a hundred studies into a meta-analysis in Psychology of Music, and the headline was a shrug: across everything, background music had no overall effect, because its harms and helps cancel out. But underneath the average, the pattern was clean. Music reliably lifted mood and arousal. It helped repetitive and physical tasks — the reason a run goes better with a beat. And it modestly impaired memory and reading — the verbal work, the studying kind.
That is the whole story in one line. Music does something genuine for you; it just doesn't do it to the part of you that learns a word. The lift is real — the same pleasant arousal that a late coffee gives you — and it's fine, even good, for getting yourself into the chair and past the first reluctant minutes. What it can't do is sit alongside the actual encoding without getting in the way. And there's a neat irony worth holding onto: singing a phrase to a tune is one of the better ways to make it stick, because there the melody carries the very words you want. Music as the words helps. Music behind the words hurts. The difference is everything.
What to actually do
None of this asks you to study in a silent white room. It asks you to be honest about which minutes are which:
- Use music to start, then hush it for the hard part. Let a song lift you into the chair — that's the arousal boost, working exactly as advertised. When you turn to the actual rehearsing of words, turn the words off.
- If you want sound while you work, drop the lyrics. Instrumental music held level with silence in Perham's reading test; vocals did not. Ambient, classical, film scores, anything wordless.
- Beware the song you know by heart. The more familiar the lyric, the more your inner voice sings along — and that's the voice you need for the word. Unfamiliar or low-key tracks intrude less than the ones you'd sing in the shower.
- Reach for silence when the sounds are new. The moment you're wrestling with an unfamiliar foreign pronunciation, competing speech is at its most damaging. That's the moment to give the word the room it needs.
Where vocabla fits
A foreign word is a small, fragile new sound that your inner ear has to hold, turn over, and file — and it deserves a clear channel to do it in. That's not an argument for grim, joyless study; it's just a reason to notice that the playlist which makes the gym better may be quietly taxing the ten minutes you spend learning saudade, and to save the lyrics for the reward rather than the work.
